How To Teach Yourself Guitar

By Tom Freeman

The guitar is an incredibly versatile instrument that is a lot of fun to play. Think of a song and you will be able to play it on the guitar. Guitars are used in every style of music from classical to rock and blues to country. You name it and the guitar can play it. It is now wonder that so many people want to learn to play the guitar. Many people seek immediate help from an instructor. However, there are a quite a few people who like to teach themselves how to play. It is possible to learn the guitar by yourself but it helps to have at least a good blue print for how to go about it.

Even a very accomplished guitarist cannot get a great sound from a guitar that won’t hold its tuning. So start out by making sure that you have a guitar that will hold its string tensions and allow for proper tuning. It does not have to be expensive but it does have to work properly. You can find very good inexpensive guitars and you can find some great deals on used guitars. Either way you don’t have to spend a lot of money but you do need to have a guitar that will at the very least stay tuned.

Once you decided you want to teach yourself guitar it is important to find a good teaching resource. There is a ton of material out there on how to play the guitar, some of it better than others. It is a good idea to get started with a reliable source for instruction so you have a solid foundation. You will want to find something that inspires and motivates you to keep playing and practicing. Playing actual songs tends to be more fun than just working on drills or techniques all the time. Of course you need to do both to become proficient but find a teaching source that gives you both so you don’t get bored or frustrated.

If you happen to be blessed with perfect pitch then you can probably tune your guitar without much assistance. If you have a good ear then over time you will probably get it right most of the time. However, most of us rely on tuning forks or today’s electronic tuning devices to get our guitars tuned up. With all this technology available there really is no excuse anymore for playing an out of tune guitar. Get your top string tuned up and then the others follow quickly from that. A few of the better guitar courses talked about earlier do provide a tuning device as part of the instruction program. This alone usually makes the investment worthwhile because you will have to get a tuning device for your guitar.
