Teach Yourself Guitar – Positioning Your Guitar

In order to play the guitar in comfort, first you need to learn the correct way of positioning your guitar. Find an armless chair that has good support for your back. Ensure that you sit comfortably with your back against the chair. Try not to slouch because this will lead to a sore back and bad guitar habits. Make sure that there is a lot of room on both sides so that you cna move your arms and hold your guitar properly.

Sit down and place the guitar on your lap with the back of the guitar facing your chest. The guitar body should placed on the leg that is the farthest from the headstock. Make sure you are comfortable and have followed the correct way of positioning your guitar. The guitar should lay on your right leg if you are right handed. The first string should be close to your feet and the sixth string should be close to your chest.

Your fret hand would be on the left if you are right handed and on the right if you are left handed. Since the right hand is used for strumming, the left hand will be used to grip the neck of the guitar gently with your thumb behind it. The rest of the fingers should be floating on top of the strings and slightly curled at the knuckles.

Once you get the positioning of the guitar correct, the next thing you need to do is to learn how to strum the guitar. Make sure you get your guitar picks ready to get into some action.
